Get Invited to Hilton Grand Vacation Promotion - Free Nights Stay at Las Vegas almost

Late March of last year, Isa and I brought my parents to tour Santa Monica, Los Angeles and Las Vegas.  Participation in the Hilton Grand Vacation promotion made the Las Vegas Stay almost free. We paid $278 for a 2-BR suite two nights stay at Hilton Grand Vacation Suites at Las Vegas Strip, and received a $200 Hilton voucher back.  The package would cost about $1,078 before tax and fees during December 2014, when my parents-in-law from Taiwan will arrive.  It is my turn to show Isa's parents hospitality.

December 2014 Las Vegas Hilton Hotels rate

December is a peak-time for Las Vegas.  Las Vegas Bellagio hotel rooms are already sold out for the month of December 2014.  I used remaining Hilton HHonors points to redeem two king bedrooms for two nights at the Hilton Grand Vacation Suites at Las Vegas Strip again, saves around $1200 ($279x2x2 + tax + fee).  There may be some inconvenience because we will stay at two different units instead of one suite; I do not have 400,000 Hilton HHonors points to redeem one 2-BR suite.  I believe my parents-in-law will enjoy the stay.  Three days at Las Vegas would be enough for us since we do not play casinos.

The following would be one way to be invited into the Hilton Grand Vacation Promotion.  Remember you are not required to participate in Hilton Grand Vacation (HGV) TimeShare Club after the promotion.

Step 1. Because HGV's objective is to sign you into their timeshare program, your interest and household income matters.  US citizenship is required.  There certainly seems to be a minimum income qualification; I gave $100K annual gross household (Isa's + my) income.  I do not recollect they checked our W2.

Step 2.  Create a Hilton HHonors account and hold at least one Hilton HHonors credit card (Visa and/or AMEX). Apply for both cards in the same day to collect 100,000 Hilton HHonors points is a good start.

Step 3. Have some Hilton HHonors points in your account (such as 50,000 HH points). One night of Las Vegas at the HGV requires 35,000 HH points.

Step 4. Call HGV 1-877-245-4482 and express your interest in Hilton Grand Vacation Program which you learn from a friend (me), ask for any available promotion to participate or try out the HGV program.

I received this notice after booking December 2014 stay

Each household is eligible to participate only once.

Step 5.  If you decline to participate in HGV club after promotion, as long as they see inside you a strong interest to purchase yet with hesitation.  Another HGV offer should come.  Honestly, their offer and promotions are quite attractive that they do seem hard to pass.  I recommend you and the other half reach some sort of consensus before attending their presentation, to minimize chances of arguments.  Note that you can always ask to think about the HGV club participation after the vacation.  There is no need to rush to a long-term financial commitment right after their presentation.

If your family plan to vacation with a big family often, vacation clubs may be a good long-term option.  It is in some way like buying a property, yet not easy to sell.  Beside Hilton Grand Vacation Club, there are
Isa and I decided that we would seriously consider club membership when credit card sign-up bonuses become trivial.  For now, our response is "wait".

Finally, a common question ...

Why bother to apply more credit cards?  I already have three credit cards.
  • I asked myself these questions since I held three credit cards many years ago, and finished a mortgage finance course which recommends to hold AT LEAST 3.  I safely chose 3; I was mistaken.  The number was set because it is assumed higher liability with more credit cards.  Financial liability is the major concern for mortgage lenders.  I called Chase, American Express and Citi to lower my liability before applying for mortgage refinance.
  • Two credit card applications take at most one hour to fill in, and the minimum spending requirements for Citi Hilton and AMEX Hilton is about $2000 for four months or $500 per month.  Gasoline alone costs $180 monthly.  In terms of opportunity cost, we do not earn $1200 in one hour.  I can afford to use one hour to apply by watching one hour of TV less. :-]
  • In contrast to common sense, holding more good credit cards can improve FICO score.
  • Typically travel reward credit cards come with annual membership fee with first year waived.  Citi Hilton (not Hilton Reserve) and AMEX Hilton do not have annual fee.  So, it is fine to forget to cancel.
If you do not mind to attend a 2-hour long presentation in return for more free hotel stays, you may consider our experience about free Two nights Stay at Venetian or Palazzo.  It was our first experience to join timeshare presentation.  Not interested to play casinos, two hours was not a problem to us.  We go to Las Vegas for great food and shows such as the O show of Cirque du Soleil.

Chase Marriott Card with 70,000 Sign-up Bonus Reward Points Offer

About four months ago, there was a promotion to earn Marriott 70,000 sign-up bonus points after spending $1000 in 3 months.  Last week, I received a targeted promotion to earn Marriott 70,000 bonus points after spending $3,000 in 3 months.

I am quite satisfied with Hilton HHonors program offering, so I would pass this myself.  The minimum spending requirement is not attractive to us either.  One good reason for me to apply for it in the future is to top off my United miles account due to United devaluation of February 14, 2014.

If you stay at Marriott hotels often, Chase Marriott card can be an attractive offer, because the card will earn 5 points for every stay at Marriott hotel worldwide.  Sometimes there is Marriott MegaBonus promotion to earn free Marriott stays after paid stay.

Another (non-guaranteed) way to earn Marriott 70,000 bonus points

How to receive this Marriott 70,000 sign-up bonus offer?
My account has 0 Marriott reward points.  I applied Chase Marriott card and was rejected two years ago, because I was a novice in the credit card bonus and applied two Chase credit cards within 2 months.  Join Marriott Reward program for free.

Does Marriott has good hotel offerings?
Yes, we stayed at JW Marriott Santa Monica before, right next to the Santa Monica beach.

How much does 70,000 Marriott points worth?
It is worth about $450.  For example, JW Marriott Santa Monica one weekend night stay, April 5-6, 2014, is priced at $310, before tax and fees, or requires 45,000 Marriott reward points.  You can transfer Chase UR points from Chase Ink or Chase Sapphire Preferred to Marriott reward account in 1:1 within the same business day.

Why don't I or Isa apply this card?
Isa indeed applied one and cancelled in the past.  Chase card sign-up bonus point offering is earned only ONCE for each Chase card.  I have other Chase credit cards which fit our needs better, recalling that Chase has a 6-months waiting period for each Chase credit card approval.

Meet Pastor Anton Cruz and RoyalKids.org

Beautiful Life

I first heard about Pastor Anton Cruz with RoyalKids.org two years ago.  His life story was impressive (it should take only 5 minutes to read).  Nevertheless, I was not moved to help, probably because I had an impression that there was always a visiting pastor coming to our church and I could not help everyone of them financially, with our financial commitments to others already.

Last December 2013, he came to our church with his eldest daughter who shared about their Brotherhood Missions to save more miserable children inside and outside of India.  Pastor Anton Cruz spoke with a gentle voice and heart.  His daughter spoke with fervent fire and conviction about the mission.  His life story and mission are not fake.  They have already helped many miserable children in India.  Here is a snapshot:

  • He gave up his high and respected status in the India caste system as a religious head to serve the miserable kids.  Imagine a millionaire volunteers to live an unstable life
  • He was kicked out of his prime rental residence with the kids.
  • I learned that our church pastor started to secretly financially supported him one decade ago, then our church got involved to donate his first school bus to transport his many saved kids.
  • A rich man came to him to offer him to live in his new residence free until Pastor Anton Cruz found his own place to house the kids.
I was changed also.  Isa wanted to offer some financial help.  I remember we walked to her daughter after their sermon ended, handed her the check and left smiling.  As a young Indian teenager girl, she was standing near the entrance door, inside a Chinese church where she visited first time.  She has a noble mission.  Pastor Anton Cruz has a noble mission.

May their light continue to shine through darkness.

Fly International for Free: United and Star Alliance Program is still the best

The good news is that United miles devaluation of Feb 2014 still allow easy redemption of international coach flight tickets via Saver Award.

For example, coach-fare round trip between US and Taiwan or Japan flying Eva Air will require 5000 United miles more, at 70,000 United miles.  There will be no increase between US and Europe at 60,000 United miles, and between US and South America at 40,000 or 60,000 United miles.  On the other hand, the miles requirement to redeem business or first class tickets has ballooned up.

We redeemed two coach-fare flight tickets for Isa's parents for the coming Thanksgiving and December by using 65,000 United miles to redeem one coach fare flight ticket with Eva Air and USD $29 fee, then used 100,000 Eva miles to redeem another coach fare ticket with Eva Air and TWD 6262 ( equivalent to USD $210).  Two Eva Air tickets around that period typically costs $1100 each including taxes and fees.

Savings: $1100 x 2 - $29 - $209 = $1961

Q1:  Typically 1 United Airlines mile is earned per dollar spent, do I then have to spend $70,000 to earn one free coach-fare international flight ticket?

Absolutely not.

Q2:  How to collect 65,000/70,000/100,000 United miles for international flights?

Credit card sign-up bonuses is the key.
  1. Understand the credit card sign-up basics, fix FICO scoreand its related posts, so you know what you are getting into.
  2. if you have non-urgent $100,000 parked outside of Fidelity, Fidelity offers 50,000 United miles as a bonus to open a Fidelity brokerage account with $100,000 for at least 6 months.
  3. Sign up for Chase Free Checking account to become a Chase customer, then check Chase branch about Chase United MileagePlus Explorer card, first year card membership waived, currently $2000 spend to earn 50,000 United miles, or to earn 5000 United miles more by adding one authorized card user, such as your mom.
  4. Six months later (Chase requires 6 months before approving a new Chase application), apply Chase Sapphire Preferred card, first year card membership waived, $3000 spending to earn 40,000 Ultimate Reward points (UR).  The UR points are transferrable with ratio 1:1 into your MileagePlus member account in 1 business day, or you can earn $400 cash instead.
  5. Wait, if you can, until next Christmas time and apply for Chase Freedom Card to earn 20,000 UR points after spending $500 in 3 months, and transfer into United MileagePlus account with the help of your Chase Sapphire Preferred card.

Total United miles collected: 50,000 + 55,000 + 40,000 + 20,000 = 165,000 United miles.  This can redeem one round-trip United Business-class flight ticket, or two round-trip United Coach-fare flight tickets.

Q3: Is there a maximum number of Chase credit cards a person can have at the same time?

Yes, 5.  I would stick to 4 myself, unless the sign-up bonus is very attractive to take the risk.  Each Chase card sign-up bonuses are available only once for life-time, unless the card service provider is different.  For example, Chase Visa card and Chase MasterCard are two different products.

Q4: Are these reward miles taxable?

No.

Q5: Should I earn United Miles or partner miles?

Eva Airlines is one of the United Miles partner.

  • An international flight ticket surcharge fee can amount to $300.  Using United miles to redeem flight ticket costs $29 whereas we still had to pay $210 to redeem using Eva miles.
  • Eva miles expiration date can not be extended.  In contrast, United miles expiration date can be extended indefinitely, as long as there is United MileagePlus activities.  I like flexibility, so would request United miles even flying Eva Air when ticket is paid.

Q6: Is there a hotel reward program to complement the airline reward program?

Yes, my current favorite is Hilton HHonors program.

Last but not the least, if there are two of you, do not apply Chase credit cards as joint account card holders.  Apply for the Chase credit card separately.

Cheap Flights to Hawaii - 3 Scenarios

I finished booking our flight tickets to Hawaii for the Hilton Grand Vacation Suites at Honolulu in the coming summer.  The booking was not the most ideal in terms of points redemption rate, but achieved one purpose to burn my Dad's last remaining 50,000 AAdvantage miles for two one-way coach fare flight tickets for flying from San Jose, California to Honolulu, Hawaii, incurring total $10 fee.  Then I used the Alaska Airline companion ticket discount code to book two one-way tickets for flying from Honolulu to Oakland, California for $356 including fees.

$356 + $10 + baggage check-in fee = +$400 for 2RT between Hawaii and California

I learned about Alaska Airline credit card after the AA redemption, otherwise could have purchase two RT Hawaii tickets using discount code for great prices.  We do not have enough miles to book business class flight tickets to Hawaii this time.

Current Credit Card Sign-Up Bonuses:
  1. Hawaiian Airlines Personal Credit Card with 35000 Hawaii miles, non-waivable $89 fee (target offer to Hawaiian Airlines member, just join for free.  Isa's account has 0 HA miles and still receives offer via email.)
  2. Hawaiian Airlines Business Credit Card with 35000 Hawaii miles, non-waivable $89 fee.
  3. Alaska Airlines Personal Credit Card with 25000 Alaska miles and $100 statement credit, $75 non-waivable fee.
  4. Alaska Airlines Business Credit Card with 25000 Alaska miles, $75 non-waivable fee.

*Alaska Airlines credit card comes with one-time domestic complimentary coach fare ticket flat cost at $118.  Hawaii Airlines credit card comes with one-time 50% off coach fare companion ticket.

A. Hawaiian Airlines: $576.40 per traveller
B. Alaska Airlines: $656.00 per traveller

Take-away:

Alaska Airlines companion ticket offers the best deal for coach fare tickets for 2, because two round-trip tickets between San Francisco and Honolulu costs $833.84, or $417 per traveler during peak travel time.  We decided to accumulate Alaska Airlines miles to redeem for its partner international flights, for example, Cathay Pacific.  If you plan to fly roundtrip economy class to Hawaii with at least one additional person within the next 12 months, Alaska Airlines companion ticket helps.

A Bad Experience about Redeeming American Airline miles for Magazines

Magazine choices
Originally, I was thinking about using the subject "Beware" or "Fraud" for this post.  But the loss would be only at most 2000 AAdvantage miles.  I should just take it easy.  Maybe my experience would bring you some laughter.

My mother had about 5000 AAdvantage miles remained in her account.  She does not seem to be interested to earn additional AAdvantage miles.  I have been interested in Barrons and The Economists magazine, so thought it would be a good time to use up her AA miles to redeem free magazine (not newspaper).

In October 2013, I used her 1900 AAdvantage miles to redeem Barron magazine.

In January 2014, I received first Barron newspaper, black and white, and is not a magazine.

This is the third Barron newspaper, a color one
1st call: Early last week, I called Magazine for Miles customer care number 1-800-961-8669 about receiving newspaper not magazine.  The customer care asked me to wait 5 days for a call from Barron after she submitted the order update request.  She initially claimed my redemption is for Barron newspaper.  I simply responded my email confirmation says "magazine subscription".

2nd call: One week went by, no call was received from Barron.  I called Magazine for Miles again.  The customer care gave a different story, saying that Barron magazine really meant newspaper according to their inventory order system.  He would not admit anything wrong on the AA side, until I explicitly said that is false advertising practice, posting product A photo and selling product B, and current AA website still shows that photo.  He asked me to call Barron to correct this, and call him for a possible refund if Barron declines.

3rd call: The call became quite ludicrous, as the Barron customer care tried to redefine what magazine means, simply saying Barron magazine is newspaper.  One option they offer is to cancel my order without refund of American AAdvantage miles.  (It recalled those times when ex-President Bill Clinton trying to re-define what sex is.)  I decided to make one last call to Magazine for Miles, for the sake of completeness.

4th call:  This is the worst experience.  I repeated product A&B idea to the customer care.  The customer care repeated several times that I have accepted AA Terms and Conditions that "Your magazine purchase with AAdvantage miles is non-refundable".  I mentioned AA possible violating consumer rights.  Finally he backed down, willing to file a request to American Airline customer care to request miles refund, without guarantee.  At this time, I decided to forget this 1900 AA miles.  Enough fun, time to move on.

This experience may not be an epitome of American Airline customer care service quality.  Two days ago, I received a voicemail from American Airline that they are looking into my request.  I prefer to forget this magazine order, and just read the Barron newspaper.  Somehow I feel that AA will refund the AA miles.  I am fine with newspaper, but not really fine with false advertisement from a large company which claims awards and recognitions.

If you try to redeem magazine using AA miles, maybe you want to check if there is a newspaper version, and you will be fine with it.  For example, The Economist has a paper version also.

Update February 24, 2014
American Airline called today to inform me that they will refund the 1900 American Airlines miles.

Costco Data Hacked - Call American Express to replace Credit Card

Costco data breach
Early this week I received a letter from American Express.  The abstract is the following:

"A merchant where you used your American Express Card detected unauthorized access to its data files [...] we believe the merchant's affected data files included your American Express Card account number, your name and other Card information such as the expiration date. Importantly, your social security number was not impacted. [...]"

"[...] you can take the following precautionary steps [...]"

  • "Review your account statements"
  • "Sign up to receive free alerts about unused account activity"
  • "Identity Theft Assistance [...] For more information about Identity Theft Assistance, call us at 1-800-297-7672 or visit www.americanexpress.com/idtheftasistance" free benefit to American Express Cardmember)
  • "Review your credit reports - To obtain an annual free copy of your credit report by
    • visiting www.annualcreditreport.com,
    • all toll-free at 1-877-322-8228
    • or complete the Annual Credit Report Request Form on the U.S. Federal Trade Commission website at www.ftc.gov and mail it to Annual Credit Report Request Service, P.O. Box 105281, Atlanta, GA 30348-5281.
    • The three national credit bureaus provide free annual credit reports only through these methods.

I checked my AMEX Costco credit card account.  There is no suspicious account activity.  I use this card for Costco purchase only.   It is confirmed that Costco has a limited data breach, reported in CNBC.  I contacted American Express to replace my Costco credit card; that would be the safest way to block future suspicious usage of my Costco credit card.  Credit frauds have become sophisticated these days.  Several of my friends got hit.

The fastest fraud I know is around Thanksgiving 2013.  A colleague of mine joined his group of friends to go to Yosemite for a Thanksgiving weekend fun.  When he returned on Monday morning, his Bank of America credit card which was his main credit card was blocked. He was alerted about over $150 spending in a Chevron gas station and spending in other stores.  He did not fill up any gas over the weekend.  He admitted that he used his credit card in some small stores.  He called Bank of America to send him a replacement card, and waited 7 days for the new card.

I would recommend not to use your credit cards in small stores or non-branded gas stations.  Pay cash.  Small stores would like you to pay cash also, so they would not have to pay credit card processing fees.

San Diego SeaWorld, San Diego Zoo, Hilton San Diego Homewood Suites - 2 Days Combo Fun - Part 2

Beautiful Life

We visited San Diego SeaWorld on Thursday, and San Diego Zoo on Friday.  It was lots of fun.  From my perspective, the tickets are not cheap.  San Diego SeaWorld worths the price, but the Zoo may not, to an adult.  To be fair, the zoo may worth much more for a kid.

  5. Bid for one-day pass for San Diego Zoo.  All purchases should receive 12% cash back tracked in your Topcashback.com account.  Allow at least 5 business days for shipping.  I found this website two days before departing for San Diego, so too late to buy the tickets via ScoreBig.com
For both theme parks, I purchased the tickets online and brought the print-outs to the parks, which turned out to be a good decision.

Recommendations
  • If your family plans for one day trip for each park, purchase the tickets via online or AAA offices.  The ticket lines at the San Diego Zoo was so long that it would be at least one hour of wait during peak season.  We felt fortunate to be able to walk to the zoo entrance right away with our print-out zoo tickets.
  • Try to be familiar with the San Diego SeaWorld programs and map and San Diego Zoo map ahead of time.  Afternoon seems to be a peak-time for the San Diego SeaWorld as it was flooded with visitors that many popular shows reached maximum fast.

  • Buy a few souvenirs and have fun.  Particularly for San Diego SeaWorld Shamu show, your family may want to sit in the first few bench to get wet, real wet.  Many folks wore raincoats or set up defenses by holding up large SeaWorld blankets.  (We bought one blanket too!)

San Diego SeaWorld, San Diego Zoo, Hilton San Diego Homewood Suites - 2 Days Combo Fun - Part 1

Beautiful Life

Before we wrapped up our Christmas vacation at Hilton Waterfront Beach Resort at Huntington Beach, we spent two days in San Diego SeaWorld and San Diego Zoo.  We tried to lower expenses to the reasonably minimum without sacrificing happiness.  As it turned out, San Diego SeaWorld or Shamu, charmed us, particularly me, so much that we left with joyful memory and several SeaWorld souvenirs.

Why San Diego SeaWorld and San Diego Zoo?
If you have kids, they would love to visit these two fun parks.  For adults, San Diego SeaWorld would still be lots of fun.

Where We Stayed
I started planning about 4 months before the trip.  There are many Hilton hotels in San Diego area.  Isa had about 120K Hilton HHonors points available (mainly from Hilton Reserve card spending and Virgin Atlantic transfer) for redeeming a quality Hilton hotel nearest to San Diego SeaWorld and Zoo.  Quite overwhelmed by choices of Hilton hotel,  I applied a systematic approach to reach our decision (see the chart below).  We picked Homewoord Suites by Hilton San Diego Airport - Liberty Station.

Homewood Suites brand did not sound promising at the beginning, even a little worrisome.  But I believe in TripAdvisor's reviews (high rating and large number of reviewers).  We used 80,000 Hilton HHonors points to redeem two nights of king bedroom suite.  The suite did not disappoint us; it reminded us of our stay at Hilton Grand Vacation Suite at Las Vegas.  Although Hilton Homewood suites is not intended to be a Hilton luxury brand, it is still spacious, quiet, and fully furnished.  The suite had a sofa bed in the living room, one TV in bedroom, and one in living room.  The suites also did a great job to soundproof the suite, so we could not hear any airplane noise.  The Hilton Homewood king bedroom suite should comfortably house a family of four.

Recall Hilton Grand Vacation Suites at Las Vegas

Every morning in the lobby was ready with free continental American breakfast buffet which was important.  The objective of this San Diego trip was to have fun in San Diego SeaWorld and Zoo which were expected to be packed with visitors.  We did not plan to look for restaurants to serve great breakfast.  It was satisfactory to have wholesome breakfast ready and nearby right at where we stayed.  If Hilton Homewood Suites customers do not feel like eating out for dinner, the hotel also serves light dinner Monday to Thursday.

Dinner Menus
Hotel staff were courteous.  Our restroom faucet was broken.  The repair staff kept apologizing and fixing.  Self-parking is free.  We spent $95 for the Virgin Atlantic credit card membership fee and received 100,000 Hilton HHonors points after conversion and $2500 spending in 3 months.  Each overnight stay at Homewood Suites during Christmas holidays was priced about $220 before tax.  Quite a good investment and still has 20,000 HHonor points left.

The out-of-pocket expense was $95 + tips

If you are planning to stay in San Diego for visiting San Diego SeaWorld and Zoo vacation, are you ready to earn Hilton HHonors points to have a comfortable stay at Hilton Homewood Suites at San Diego?

Hilton Waterfront Beach Resort, $95 for Two Nights

Beautiful Life

We wanted to drive, so drove from northern California to southern California (San Diego and Los Angeles) to enjoy a warm Christmas and New Year vacation.  It was also time to redeem the two bonus Hilton hotel certificates from Hilton Reserve Card that were saved for a planned Europe trip which did not  materialize. (Tips to find Hilton hotel rooms available for redeem)

Planning
  • I skimmed through Hilton Category chart to locate the highest category Hilton hotels in California to redeem the two Hilton certificates applicable for standard-rate room only.
  • Beach resort is preferred.

Based on its proximity to a beach, Los Angeles and San Diego, Hilton Waterfront Beach Resort, a Hilton category 9 hotel, was our pick.

Quality of Stay - Excellent
  • The cleanliness and staff courtesy anywhere in the hotel was excellent; whenever we tried to take a photo of us, a hotel staff would come over to offer his/her assistance.
  • Our bedroom was spacious, clean and quiet.
  • The beach resort is located just one block from the Huntington Beach which itself is a beauty.
  • The downtown is about 0.5 mile away from hotel, with plenty of nice restaurant choices.
  • The Shades restaurant offers excellent food and services with attractive prices after the 20% discount.
  • Isa got a cold and fever in the first night stay.  The room-cleaning lady automatically placed a ice-filled bucket in our room next day, as I filled the bucket with ice the night before.

Is this Sunset view relaxing?
At the reception, Hilton Gold membership complimentary benefits were presented by the receptionist.
  • Free Wi-Fi
  • Free Hilton Continental Cold Breakfast or $15 credit applied to any Hilton order (in restaurant or room service)
  • One-time 20% Discount applied to brunch, lunch or dinner at the Shades restaurant inside Hilton Waterfront Beach Resort
*Hilton Reserve Card automatically comes with Hilton Gold membership for one year

Cost
  • $95 Hilton Reserve Card non-waive-able membership fee with $2500 minimum spending requirement within the first 4 months.  We saved $300 for two nights stay.

Why is Eye Sight Blurry in Center? Central Serous Retinopathy (CSR) and Macular Degeneration (AMD)

Beautiful Life

Happy New Year!

I like to share about a personal experience of mine as my first blog of 2014, to encourage specifically those few who have experienced an eye sight disorder - central serous retinopathy (CSR) and/or wet age-related macular degeneration (AMD).  Without health, it is no fun to earn credit card sign-up bonuses for discounted luxury travels, right?

Imagine the feeling of standing within 12 inches of your husband /wife /kids /parents /boyfriend /girlfriend, and seeing only slurry faces with facial features non-distinguishable.  That was my experience for 2 months in 2012.  It puts my life into better perspective.

Blurry Eye Sight in the Center - CSR

Causes:  I am nearsighted, as my eye balls are elongated in shape that they are more prone to CSR.  In 2002, I played a SimCity computer game for five straight nights until my PC graphics card crashed.

Symptoms:  Several days after that sleep-deprived gaming activity,
  • Words on my computer monitor seemed slanted.
  • Building line was not seen as straight line.
  • Squinting my left eye lids would see a circular shadow in the center.
  • Dizziness due to my left eye which was the dominant eye had CSR, with my right eye now trying hard to visualize the object.  Driving became more difficult.
Diagnosis: My left eye was inspected by an opthalmologist from my Kaiser HMO.  The conclusion was that stress and no-rest caused my weaker left eye to have inner fluid detachment.  From Wikipedia,

CSR is a fluid detachment of macula layers from their supporting tissue. This allows choroidal fluid to leak into the subretinal space. The build-up of fluid seems to occur because of small breaks in the retinal pigment epithelium.

Treatment: The doctor recommendation was to rest and relax, take vitamin A to strengthen the one-cell layer (retinal pigment epithelium) so it would less likely to rupture.  Whenever I felt stressed or line started to look crooked, I would step away from the computer and relax.

Result:  My left eye recovered within 14 days.

The "Comeback" of CSR + AMD in 2012

For the next 10 years, I did not experience CSR.  I thought it would not come back.  In late September 2012, the discovery of another (more serious) disorder caused significant sleeplessness and anxiety.  CSR soon re-appeared in my left eye, as confirmed by my opthalmologist.  He also added seeing something looked like blood vessels, therefore my left vision center was a little opaque.   The same recovery routine of last time did not help my left eye this time.  The dark center area did not go away.

In October 2012, the "blind spot" in the center of my left eye seemed to turn darker and unchanged in size.  My opthalmologist said there is no medication guarantee to work with an eye surgery option as a possible remediation.  Eye surgery sounds scary; I preferred to wait.

When closing my right eye, my left eye could not see Isa's facial features (eyes, nose, lips) even I was sitting within 12 inches from her.

On Nov 20, 2012, the dark shadow significantly grew in size, such that I could no longer read a single English word.  I left work immediately to see my opthalmologist.

November 20, 2012
It was related to wet age-related macular degeneration (AMD).   The doctor did not believe I would have wet AMD; he would not call it wet AMD.  The discomfort from not able to see is greater than the fear of an eye surgery.  I asked for an eye surgery.  It was not easy.  He responded calmly that he was ready to perform in his office, right on the chair where I was sitting !

The eye surgery which he referred to, I soon learned, is a simple one and quite painless.  He injected one shot (Bevacizumab = Avastin) into the rear side of my left eye with some anesthetic applied around my left area.  The dark center circle immediately shrinked into a tiny black spot within a few days.

I took this photo in my last office visit, as Dr always had it ready

The injection was a magic wand to wipe off the blood inside my eyes

On Feb 8, 2013, I requested for a second shot.  A follow-up on March 20, 2013 showed good results. Additional shot would not help to heal the scarred area which was previously covered by blood.  Those scarred areas needed to be naturally healed.

March 22, 2013

For the next 6 months, I stayed relax, had faith that my left eye that it would recover by itself, took vitamin A to boost up my eye condition.  Since March 2013, I was much less bothered by the other disorder discovered in September 2012.  I was just grateful that my left eye could see again.

September 20, 2013
On September 20, 2013, my final eye exam confirmed that my left eye was indeed on the path of self-healing.  This is one major reason why we had French Laundry dinner in November 2013.

Take-away
  • No long-hours computer game playing.  (The energy is used more pleasantly to learn and earn credit card sign-up bonuses instead)
  • Kaiser or any HMO would be a good choice to stick with if you have recurring CSR and do not want to pay much.  I was informed by the doctor that some patients would need the eye shot monthly.  Each eye shot and visit together costs USD $70 which is a co-payment.
  • If you experience CSR or AMD, first relax, relax, relax (N times).  Stress would only worsen the condition.
  • I stopped wearing contact lens since September 2012.  Contact lens tend to dry out eye quickly.
  • PreserVision Vitamin (available on Amazon $25 for 120 gels, or Costco $30 for 180 gels, where Costco membership is required) seems to help. I have been taking since February 8, 2013.
  • Most importantly, none of the above recommendations guarantee eye recovery.  I relied the recovery mostly on my Faith.
I am very grateful that my left eye could see again.

Because of this left eye recovery, I am able to continue my blog writing.

Ordered 4 bottles of Baush+Lomb PreserVision Vitamins from Costco.

With $5 off, Costco's price is the lowest. Costco membership is required

Vision loss can be due to various causes.   This post is about only my experience with CSR and Wet AMD.  If you try to view an object close or far, and vision is blurry in the center of your eye (right or left or both eyes), or straight line appears crooked, consult your opthalmologist ASAP.
