Best Reward Cards >>

AMEX SPG email in my inbox says ...

As a Card Member, you know the value of your Starpoints® and the rich rewards you can get from the Starwood Preferred Guest® program. Now you can help spread the word to your friends, family and colleagues
and earn 5,000 bonus Starpoints for each approved referral. The more friends you refer, the more
Starpoints you can earn — up to 55,000 Starpoints per calendar year.

Your friends must apply for the Card through the REFER NOW buttons in the email and be approved

in order for you to earn your Referral Bonus.

Terms & Conditions

1 You can receive 5,000 Starpoints Referral Bonus for each new Starwood Preferred Guest Credit Card application you refer resulting in an approved account, up to a maximum of 55,000 Starpoints per calendar year. To receive the Referral Bonus, (a) you must submit referral(s) by 10/1/2014 and (b) the referred individual(s) must apply to the specific offer online through the emailed link provided by American Express and be approved by 10/1/2014

This offer is available online only to Basic Card Members. Please allow 6–8 weeks for the Referral Bonus to post to your account after each referred individual is approved for the Card. You cannot earn a Referral Bonus for those who currently have the Card you recommended or for individuals who have been referred by someone else. Due to the confidential nature of the credit approval process, you will not be notified of whether we approve or decline any application(s) from individual(s) you refer. Also, the individuals you refer may not receive the referral email if they have previously "opted out" of receiving email marketing communications from American Express. Any violation or abuse of this program may result in the forfeiture of the Referral Bonus. In order to receive the Referral Bonus, your account must be active and in good standing at the time of fulfillment. Terms & restrictions of the rewards program corresponding to your Card account apply. NOTE: The value of the Referral Bonus may be taxable income to you; you are responsible for any federal or state taxes resulting from the Referral Bonus. Please consult your tax advisor if you have questions about the tax treatment of the Referral Bonus.

This promotion targets current AMEX SPG personal or business card holder.  You receive this email because you are already an AMEX SPG card holder.  Isa has received this email (I am her email account secretary.)  Recall that AMEX SPG card can be re-applied to receive bonus points 12 months after the card is cancelled.

One observations is made:

To receive the Referral Bonus, (a) you must submit referral(s) by 10/1/2014 and (b) the referred individual(s) must apply to the specific offer online through the emailed link provided by American Express and be approved by 10/1/2014

... 10/1/2014 is 10 months away from now.  The person who has cancelled the AMEX SPG card before 9/15/2013 (conservative date rather than 9/30/2013, may need to call into the reconsideration line) should be able to receive the SPG sign-up bonus again when approved, and his referrer will also receive 5,000 bonus points.  For example, I plan to apply SPG cards in June 2014, so Isa should be able to earn 5,000 bonus points if she refers me, regardless whether she still has her SPG card or not.  Because there is no guarantee from American Express that the referral link will continue to work till 10/1/2014, I would recommend to use the link to email referral links to family and friends who may be interested to apply SPG card before 9/30/2014.  I never know.

I have encouraged my brother to apply the SPG card several times in 2013 to experience the free benefits of SPG, as he is a big spender, but with no avail.  Then, because his friends organized a San Diego get-to-gether trip and planned to stay in Sheraton hotel using cash and points during the upcoming Christmas holidays, my brother and his wife immediately applied one for each of them.  Peer pressure rules, a little bit speechless :-]
