How to Keep Eva Air Miles from Expiring - Earn United Air Miles

United Air and Eva Air are worldwide partners.  I can earn United Air award miles instead of Eva Air miles. Eva Air miles seem to expire every four years, whereas United Airline miles can be kept from expiring by dining at the MileagePlus Dining participating restaurants.

However, the earning is not always 1:1.   The reward depends on the Eva Air fight ticket class.

If my Eva Air boarding pass ticket class is not listed in the table above, then it would not earn any United Air miles.  Better to earn Eva Air reward miles.  Otherwise, I would earn United Air reward miles even when traveling with Eva.  The same evaluation principle below applies to any United Air partners of which the miles are hard to kept from expiring.

For example, I traveled with Eva Air ticket class X which receives 50% Base Miles

One round trip from San Francisco to Taipei:
~6450 miles x 2
= 12,900 Eva miles
=   6,450 United Airline miles

But it costs 120,000 Eva miles to redeem a round-trip San Francisco - Taipei Eva ticket, and only 65,000 United Airline miles to redeem for a round-trip Saver Award San Francisco - Taipei (with less flexible time restriction which I am willing to accommodate). Therefore, the true miles/ticket value are actually:

13,000 Eva miles earned / 120,000 Eva miles required = 0.108
6,450 United miles earned / 65,000 United miles required = 0.099

The values are almost equivalent.  It would take 10 round-trips of San Francisco - Taipei flying Eva Air to accumulate enough Eva Air miles to redeem for one round-trip Eva Air ticket.  For non-frequent Eva Air traveler who flies with Eva fewer than 10 times in four years and higher-than-class-X ticket, earning United miles instead would be a more attractive option.

Benefits of United Air miles

  • redeem for hotel or car rental
  • do not expire as long as there are more United miles added to the U.A. account.
