How to Dispose or Recycle Paint Can and Paint

Several containers of paint (Latex or oil-based) have been sitting in my garage, as the left-over from the kitchen and restroom remodeling of my residence.  It is time to properly dispose them, as I was informed by my contractors that these are hazardous waste materials.  But they don't know how to dispose them.
