Where to Buy a Comcast-compatible Internet Cable Modem?

Beautiful Life

Instead of paying $7 monthly to rent a Comcast cable modem, have you thought about purchasing one?

1: Check your cable monthly service bill to identify which cable internet service you currently have

2: Identify the cable modem that is compatible with Comcast Cable service

3: Select the "Residential Speed Tiers".  For example, mine is "Performance"

4: I trust Amazon services, only found one that is available via Amazon with 4+ star ratings

$90.  I can recoup this cost after 1 year with cable internet service.

5. I preferred to contact Comcast via their online chat.  They will ask for Comcast account information, and the modem information.  They first added the modem to my Comcast cable account. (It took 30 minutes)

  • Make Model:     Motorola SB6121 SURFboard DOCSIS 3.0 Cable Modem
  • Serial Number    see the label on the modem
  • MAC address     see the label on the modem

6. At home, plug in the Motorola cable modem and connect to the computer directly without wireless router to make testing simpler

7. Contact Comcast Activation team 1-855-OK-BEGIN (1-855-652-3446), who will send a signal to the new Motorola modem to verify internet connection.

Update: regarding step #7, the process takes about 15 minutes for the new modem to receive the signal and activate the modem (waiting for all blue lights to light up).  Have the MAC address ready.

8. Once the connection is verified working with the new modem, return the original Comcast internet cable modem to nearest Comcast office.  Retain the return receipt as proof for confirmation in the upcoming Comcast billing cycle.

The Motorola internet modem is working well, saving $7 per month from the Comcast monthly modem rental fee.

Update:
In my first Comcast bill, the $7 rental fee is still charged.  I used Comcast live chat.

Symone: I have now corrected your issue here from modem rental fee of $7.00 to the modem owned for $0.00. That means you won't be charged for the modem anymore.
Patrick: thank you
Symone: And I also have processed a credit for you for the modem charge.
