Last week I shared about noticing the new Chase 24-month wait period for previous Chase card holder. Beside Chase Sapphire Preferred card, my second favorite Chase card to apply (but not to hold) is the Chase United MileagePlus Explorer card with promotional 50,000 (55,000) bonus United miles. We found United miles very useful. Previous Chase United MileagePlus card holder can now apply again after 24 months.
50,000 bonus miles + $50 statement credit |
This new cardmember bonus offer is not available to either (i) current cardmembers of this consumer credit card, or (ii) previous cardmembers of this consumer credit card who received a new cardmember bonus for this consumer credit card within the last 24 months. With this bonus offer you will qualify and receive 50,000 bonus miles after you make Purchases totaling $2,000 or more during the first 3 months from account opening. ("Purchases" do not include balance transfers, cash advances, cash-like charges such as travelers checks, foreign currency, and money orders, any checks that access your account, overdraft advances, interest, unauthorized or fraudulent charges, or fees of any kind, including an annual fee, if applicable.) After qualifying, please allow 6 to 8 weeks for bonus miles to post to your account. To be eligible for this bonus offer, account must be open and not in default at the time of fulfillment. Bonus miles do not count towards Premier status.
Be Prepared though ...
I expect Chase will check credit card history, relationship with Chase Bank, Chase card churn-over rate, in addition to simply excellent FICO score. I definitely recommend at least having an active Chase checking account and an excellent relationship with Chase Bank before application, because they will significantly help in your phone discussion with the Chase representative if your card is in consideration stage.
And I spent some time to learn more ...
- Chase no longer promotes United MileagePlus Explorer card in its credit card web page, not even the lower 30,000 United miles offer. For people who never fly United Airlines or do not already know the existence of United MileagePlus Explorer card, they may miss out the valuable United frequent flyer program or the 50,000 offer from this credit card. (Note Chase MileagePlus Explorer card is not the same as Chase MileagePlus Club card.)
- Limited-time offer through September 2, 2014: public Chase MileagePlus Explorer card with 50,000 (or 55,000) bonus miles, after $2000 spending in the first 3 months via this application link. (The link is quite unstable). If you are not sure whether you can apply again for the card, call 1-866-738-4256 to confirm your eligibility for the 50,000 bonus miles.
- Chase MileagePlus Explorer card with 50,000 (55,000) bonus miles + $50 statement credit: Login your free United MileagePlus account. Check to see if you have a 30,000 or 50,000 bonus miles offer for the Chase United MileagePlus card. If your account page shows 50,000 bonus offer, try to book a United flight. In the "Select Departing Flight" page, you should see "50,000 bonus miles + $50 statement credit" banner. Then click on the banner and follow the steps.
In the past, Chase card bonus was a one-time bonus, and risked being ignored after bonus points are received. The new policy makes the card more attractive now. However, a 24-month period is a long time; probably 24 months later, the offer can be changed to 36 months or more. Therefore, I am delighted to find this change, yet keep my expectation from jumping too high. If you forget when you received the 50,000 United miles from Chase United MileagePlus card, log into your United membership account and check account history.
If the new policy stays, I should be able to apply Chase Sapphire Preferred card with 45,000 Ultimate Reward points again in 2015. That would be nice.
