American Express Hilton 50,000 HHonors card offering is available again until 5/31/2014.  Citi and American Express Hilton HHonors cards have enabled us to stay many times at Hilton hotels for free in 2013.  (We look forward for our upcoming Hawaii trip).  Although there was significant devaluation since one year ago, Hilton HHonors program still saves us money in vacation stays.   Not to mention the minimum spending requirement is low.


The rules of applying Citi credit cards have changed.  They currently are:

1. Card applicant is not eligible for the sign-up bonus if a current Hilton HHonors card holder
2. Citi would not approve two Citi credit card applications at the same day.
3. It is recommended to hold American Express Hilton HHonors card for at least one year before canceling it.
4. Both Citi Hilton HHonors signature card and American Express Hilton HHonors card are churn-able.
5. 12-months of wait to churn AMEX Hilton and 3-months of wait to churn Citi Hilton cards.

I have learned that collecting vacation currency makes sense to me, if

• we plan to make reservation within 6 months after receiving the points, to redeem for free hotel room or flight another 6 months later.  For example, today is March 4, 2014, if we plan to stay at Hilton hotel by March 4, 2015, and our current available Hilton HHonors points are not sufficient for free hotel stays, then I would apply both Citi Hilton HHonors and American Express Hilton HHonors credit cards in the same day.  I would save Citi Hilton HHonors Reserve card (non-churn-able) to redeem for expensive 2-nights Hilton hotel stays.

The two cards together would earn 100,000 Hilton HHonors card sign-up bonus, plus 2,250 HHonors from $750 spending requirement, plus 2,000 HHonors from $1000 spending requirement for Citi Visa card.

100,000 + 2,250 + 2,000 = 104,250 HHonors points

Equivalent to free 3-nights at Hilton Grand Vacation at Las Vegas Strips, Dec 26 - 29, 2014. ( Spend $750/3 = $250 more with American Express Hilton HHonors card, to earn 750 HHonors)
