I performed an experiment to understand marketing. It seems that my assumption is correct. I deposited 1000 miles from Chase Sapphire account to my United Mileage Membership Card account, and expected that would catch United marketing program attention. Since I personally have not applied for the Chase MileagePlus Explorer card in the past, I like to be notified of attractive promotions.
+ 50000 Bonus miles after spending after $1000
+ 5000 Adding an authorized user
+ 10000 Annual spending $25000 bonus
Expire July 31, 2012
This is not as good as the after first purchase to receive 50,000 miles bonus. so I will continue to wait.
